FSC Solutions That Support Your EUDR Journey
Robust certification can help companies meet EUDR requirements. As one of the most robust sustainable forestry solutions, FSC is strongly aligned with the EUDR legality and sustainability requirements and can help companies assess and minimize the risk that relevant forest-based products come from a land which was deforested or degraded.
Thanks to involvement in the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) – which was used to build the EUDR – FSC has acquired over 10 years of experience with the concept of due diligence and has supported companies and EU Competent Authorities in fighting illegal logging and deforestation across Europe and globally.

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) introduces new expectations for traceability, legality, and deforestation‑free sourcing. While FSC certification does not replace or remove any legal obligations under the EUDR, it provides suppliers and EU buyers with credible systems, data structures, and verification mechanisms that support key aspects of due diligence.
FSC’s global standards and tools—such as Forest Management certification, Chain of Custody certification, and FSC Trace—offer reliable frameworks for responsible sourcing and transparent supply chains. These systems are grounded in rigorous environmental, social, and legal requirements, helping businesses demonstrate responsible practices and organise the information that EU buyers will increasingly request under the EUDR.
Through certification, independent auditing, and digital traceability platforms, FSC strengthens supply‑chain integrity from forest to finished product. This helps support EUDR expectations for legality, risk assessment, and transparent material flows—while recognising that companies must still meet all regulatory requirements directly, including geolocation and due‑diligence statements.
For APAC suppliers, FSC provides a practical foundation for preparing accurate information, responding to EU buyer requests, and reducing uncertainty as EUDR implementation progresses. Although FSC is not a compliance shortcut, it is a powerful enabler that supports responsible sourcing and clearer pathways toward meeting evolving market regulations.

Role of FSC in EUDR
This section explains how FSC supports alignment with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) — and where the limits of that support are. FSC offers reliable systems that strengthen transparency and responsible sourcing, but EUDR compliance remains a legal responsibility of EU‑based operators.
What FSC Provides
FSC’s global standards and tools help companies strengthen the foundations needed for responsible and transparent supply chains. These elements support key information areas that EU buyers must collect for EUDR due diligence.
Improved traceability across the supply chain through FSC Chain of Custody certification, which verifies material flows from forest to finished product.
Structured data and documentation, supporting legality, sourcing information, and risk‑related details that EU operators must gather.
Risk assessment and mitigation frameworks that help companies identify and address potential sourcing concerns.
Credible evidence of responsible sourcing, supported by independent audits and internationally recognised standards.
These tools help suppliers respond more effectively to the information EU buyers will request under the EUDR.
What FSC Does Not Do
To avoid any misunderstanding, it’s important to be clear about the boundaries of FSC’s role:
FSC certification does not exempt companies from EUDR obligations — certification supports due‑diligence data but does not replace legal requirements.
FSC does not determine product scope under the EUDR (e.g., HS codes or Annex I product lists). Scope is set solely by the EU.
FSC does not submit Due Diligence Statements (DDS) on behalf of companies. Only EU operators are legally responsible for filing them.
FSC does not take legal liability for EUDR compliance; all responsibility remains with EU operators and traders
What This Means for APAC Suppliers
While EUDR legal obligations apply to EU operators, APAC suppliers play a critical role in the compliance process:
-
EUDR legal responsibility sits with EU operators
-
EU operators must collect detailed sourcing data from suppliers to complete their due‑diligence statements.
-
-
APAC suppliers are critical data providers
-
Without accurate information from suppliers — including traceability, legality, and risk details — EU operators cannot place products on the EU market.
-
-
FSC tools does not replace EUDR data requirements
-
They can help APAC suppliers organise and communicate this information more effectively.
-
This makes supplier cooperation essential for smooth trade with the EU.
